“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6,8)
Several weeks ago, my baby had a blowout in his car seat on the way home from church. In the process of cleaning up, it got on me, my dress, his clothes, a blanket, and a towel. We ended up in the shower rinsing both of us off (a process he hated). I looked at him and thought about how nasty all of this was, but how much I still love him. I can’t help but love this little guy. He’s my son. Even when his diaper leaks on me, or he spits up half-digested milk on my shoulder, I will still love him.
My baby is far from my enemy (even when these unpleasant things happen), but I couldn’t help but think, as I cleaned him up, of how God set his love on us when we were yet sinners. When we were dirty and messy, like my baby, God set his love on us in Christ and saved us. While we were still his enemies. We were running from him. He didn’t wait for us to turn to him (we never would have). He didn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up (we never could have). He loved us and he saved us while we were yet sinners. What amazing love!
